Global competitive edge for the Finnish hydrogen and battery industries

The Hydrogen & Batteries – Dual Helix of Decarbonization program promotes the development and international growth of the Finnish hydrogen and battery industry value chains, technologies, solutions and services.

The program aims to achieve significant commercial results for both the hydrogen and battery industries benefiting from strong synergies. Investment projects in Finland will result in significant business, creating wealth, new jobs and tax revenues. According to a Boston Consulting Group report (Finland's Moonshots for Green Growth), the potential for green exports in Finland is EUR 85-100 billion by 2035. The hydrogen and battery industry plays a major role in this.

The program will run from 2023 to 2028 with objectives:

• Supporting innovations and ecosystems (Driving Innovations); companies and stakeholders are aware of the huge opportunities, investments in research, development and innovation (RDI) will increase significantly and internationally competitive ecosystems, business models and technologies will emerge in Finland.
• Export growth and investment attraction (Investments); companies have built capabilities for international business in these sectors, generating strong export growth. Finland has attracted a significant number of billion-dollar industrial investments across the value chains.
• Developing the business environment and conditions (Policy play); companies have achieved a good position in EU funding and industrial policy in general. The programme has been active in developing the operational business environment for enterprises.
• Securing skills for the sector (Behavioural change); the programme has raised positive awareness of the hydrogen and battery industry and attracted talent, both domestic and international, to the sector.

Target groups

The Hydrogen & Batteries program is targeted at startups, SMEs, midcap and large companies registered in Finland, as well as research organizations.

• Research: funding for Finnish research organizations
• Business: innovation funding for foreign companies registered in Finland
